here among the insects
and amphibians of the night
her body like a shadow
moving so very soft
and delicate
through the brush
and thorns

she walks along the rocks
balancing herself with her arms
red hair dancing across her shoulders
and brushing each cheek
acts as if i’m not here

she whispers the words
smiling down at the water
that reflects her image back up at her
and finds a spot at the lip of the cave
where she sits
watching the rain as it begins to fall
filling up her footprints across the valley floor

“I am my own and you are with me.
Take me away with you.”

she whispers in a sing-song voice
the words drift down from the cave
to where i sit
beneath the tree
in the rain
the rain is another voice

“We are together now.”
….always together…”

i watch as she smiles and spins
the rain swirling around her
thunder filling the world
and the lightning filling her eyes

“Sing with me…”

and i walk over to her
her face and arms up towards the sky

“Sing loud! This could be our last day!
Hold it forever with me…”

closes her eyes as she reaches out
straining her arms as if hoping
to brush her fingertips against the stars

“Dance with me tonight…”
